Is Professional Rug Washing Worth the Money?

Is Professional Rug Washing Worth the Money?

Or is it just expensive carpet cleaning with a better publicist?

Let's say you have a beautiful area rug. You bought it because you loved the colours, the softness, the way it brought the whole room together.

Maybe you even paid a small fortune for it.

Fast-forward a few years, and that same rug has lost some of its charm. The colours have dulled beneath layers of dirt, the fibres are looking a little tired, and there's a mysterious smell that nobody in the family seems willing to take responsibility for.

The dog looks suspicious, but he's not talking.

Now you're wondering: Is professional Rug Washing Worth the Money, or should you just have the carpet cleaner run over it while he's doing the living room?

Well, we're glad you asked.

And yes, we're a little biased. We are called Luv-A-Rug, after all, not "We Think Rugs Are Just Okay."

But hear us out.

Carpet Cleaning and Rug Washing Aren't the Same Thing

Here at Luv-A-Rug in Victoria, BC, we've seen what happens when people assume cleaning an area rug is the same as cleaning wall-to-wall carpeting.

And we can tell you there's a pretty big difference.

Traditional carpet cleaning methods, whether steam cleaning, hot water extraction, bonnet cleaning, or dry powder cleaning, primarily work from the surface.

And that's perfectly reasonable when you're cleaning wall-to-wall carpeting. You can't exactly roll up your living room carpet, carry it outside, and give it a proper bath.

An area rug, however, is a different animal.

And after years of collecting dirt, it may actually contain parts of several animals.

When we wash an area rug, we're not simply trying to make the surface look better. We're working to remove the soil that's accumulated deep within the rug.

It's the difference between wiping down your car with a damp cloth and giving it a proper wash.

Both might make it look better. Only one gets the mud out of the wheel wells.

Your Rug Has Been Collecting More Than Compliments

Here's something most people don't realize.

Area rugs are remarkably good at hiding dirt.

Every time someone walks across your rug, tiny particles of soil, sand, dust, and whatever else came in on their shoes work their way down between the fibres.

Eventually, much of that material settles deep into the rug's foundation.

Vacuuming helps, of course. We highly recommend it. But even an expensive vacuum cleaner can't necessarily reach everything buried down there.

Think of it like washing your hair.

You wouldn't just clean the top layer of your hair and declare the job finished. You'd want to get right down to the scalp.

The same principle applies to your rug.

At Luv-A-Rug, our goal isn't simply to make the surface look cleaner. We want to remove that accumulated soil from deep within the rug, using a washing process appropriate for its fibres, dyes, and construction.

Because a rug that looks clean and a rug that's actually been thoroughly washed can be two very different things.

Is Professional Rug Washing Worth the Money When Your Rug Smells Like Fido?

Ah, yes. The smell.

You know the one.

You walk into the room, catch a faint whiff of something unpleasant, and immediately start checking everyone's shoes.

Eventually, you discover the culprit is your beloved area rug.

Dogs, cats, spilled drinks, tracked-in grime, and years of everyday living can introduce unpleasant odours into rug fibres and foundations.

And spraying something that smells like a tropical rainforest over a rug that smells like a wet Labrador doesn't solve the underlying problem.

Now you've just got a wet Labrador in a tropical rainforest.

We see this sort of thing all the time.

That's why our washing process focuses on removing the contamination causing the odour, rather than simply trying to disguise it.

Depending on the rug and the source of the smell, we may also recommend specialized treatment.

Our objective is to get rid of what's causing the problem, not introduce a competing fragrance and hope the two reach some sort of peace agreement.

Our Secret Ingredient Is Mostly Water (and Armstrong)

One of the things that surprises people about our washing process is that we don't need to drown their rugs in shampoo.

In fact, much of the work we do involves water, appropriate cleaning solutions, and good old-fashioned Armstrong.

For anyone unfamiliar with that last ingredient, Armstrong is an ancient cleaning technology powered by elbows.

No batteries required.

We use washing, rinsing, and physical work to release and remove embedded soil. The precise method depends on the rug, because a fine silk rug and a synthetic living room rug are hardly going to appreciate identical treatment.

And while we want to remove as much accumulated soil as safely possible, we certainly don't want to leave behind unnecessary shampoo residue.

After all, nobody buys a beautiful rug because they're hoping to someday walk across a crunchy sheet of dried detergent.

We want your rug to come home looking gorgeous, feeling soft, and smelling like something you'd actually want in your living room.

Preferably not Fido.

What About the Cost?

Let's get back to the original question: Is professional Rug Washing Worth the Money?

Well, that depends partly on your rug.

If you've got a $39 throw rug that has survived three children, two puppies, and a plumbing disaster, replacing it might make more financial sense.

No judgment. That rug has served its country.

But if you have a quality wool rug, a Persian or Oriental rug, a treasured family piece, or even a synthetic rug that you genuinely love, professional washing can be a worthwhile investment.

Here's what we're actually working to accomplish when you bring your rug to us:

  • Remove deeply embedded dirt that ordinary surface cleaning may leave behind.

  • Bring back those beautiful colours by removing the soil that's been dulling their appearance.

  • Tackle unpleasant odours caused by pets, spills, and everyday living.

  • Restore softness and texture wherever the rug's condition allows.

  • Help extend your rug's useful life by removing abrasive soil that contributes to fibre wear.

And perhaps most importantly, we're helping you avoid having to replace a rug you already love.

Now, we can't perform miracles. If the fibres have physically worn away, washing won't grow them back. And some stains or odours can be permanent.

But you'd be surprised how much better a properly washed rug can look and feel.

We've seen plenty of rugs arrive looking as though they're ready for retirement, only to leave with a whole new lease on life.

Fall in Love With Your Rug All Over Again

Remember when you first brought your rug home?

You unrolled it, stepped back, admired the colours, and thought, "Now that's exactly what this room needed."

You probably didn't imagine that five years later it would be harbouring enough dirt to start a small vegetable garden.

But life happens.

People walk on rugs. Kids spill things. Pets do things we'd rather not discuss.

And slowly, almost imperceptibly, your beautiful rug loses some of what made you fall in love with it in the first place.

That's one of the things we enjoy most about what we do here at Luv-A-Rug.

Taking a tired, dull, dirty rug and bringing back the qualities that made its owner love it in the first place.

After all, we didn't call ourselves Luv-A-Rug by accident.

So, Is Professional Rug Washing Worth the Money?

If you value your area rug and want to keep enjoying it for years to come, we believe the answer is a resounding yes.

Carpet cleaning certainly has its place. But when it comes to removable area rugs, a proper washing process can accomplish things that surface-focused cleaning methods simply aren't designed to do.

And here in Greater Victoria, that's exactly what we specialize in.

We're not interested in just making your rug look a little less dirty.

We want you to fall in love with it all over again.

Got a Rug That's Looking Tired, Feeling Flat, or Smelling Suspicious?

Bring it to us at Luv-A-Rug in Victoria, BC, and let us have a look.

We'll help you understand what can realistically be accomplished before you spend your money.

Because your rug deserves better than a quick once-over and a squirt of something that smells like artificial pine trees.

And frankly, so does your nose.
