How Long Does It Take to Wash an Area Rug?

How Long Does It Take to Wash an Area Rug?

How long does it take to wash an area rug? At Luv-A-Rug® in Victoria, BC, the professional washing process typically takes about one week. However, the total turnaround time depends on our current waiting time. Currently, customers can generally expect approximately three weeks from drop-off to pickup, including two weeks in the queue and one week for washing, drying and finishing. For customers who need their rugs cleaned immediately, we also offer a do-it-yourself dry extraction cleaning system for rent.

How Long Does It Take to Wash an Area Rug Professionally?

It's a fair question. You can have the wall-to-wall carpets in your entire house cleaned in a few hours, so why does washing one area rug take a week or more?

The difference is in the process.

At Luv-A-Rug®, we don't simply run a carpet-cleaning wand over the surface of your rug. We specialize in professional area rug washing, which involves a much more thorough cleaning process.

Rugs are individually washed using methods appropriate to their construction, thoroughly rinsed and then carefully dried in our specialized facility.

The actual washing, drying and finishing process typically takes about one week.

But there's another factor that affects how quickly you get your rug back.

Why Is There a Bit of a Wait Time for Area Rug Washing?

We're fortunate to have a lot of customers who trust us with their rugs. And because we process rugs in an organized queue, yours may have to wait its turn before washing begins.

As Dusty Roberts, Team Leader at Luv-A-Rug®, explains, there's a difference between how long it takes to wash a rug and how long it takes to get your rug back.

For example, right now our typical schedule looks something like this:

  • Waiting in the queue: Approximately two weeks before washing begins.
  • Professional washing and finishing: Approximately one week.
  • Total turnaround time: Approximately three weeks.

So, how long does it take to wash an area rug when we're especially busy?

The actual washing time remains approximately one week for most rugs, but the waiting list can bring the total turnaround to three, four or even five weeks.

During quieter periods, your rug might be ready in as little as seven to ten days.

That's why we always recommend asking about our current turnaround time before bringing in your rug.

We'll happily give you an estimate over the phone or by text.

What If You Need Your Area Rug Cleaned Right Away?

We get it. Sometimes you don't have three weeks to spare.

Maybe you're hosting a family gathering, getting the house ready for visitors or suddenly realizing that your rug looks a little less presentable than you remembered.

And the company is coming tomorrow!

Fortunately, there's another option.

At Luv-A-Rug®, we rent out a professional dry extraction cleaning system that allows you to clean your own area rug at home.

It's a practical alternative when you need to improve your rug's appearance without waiting for a complete professional washing.

How Does Our DIY Dry Rug Cleaning System Work?

Our rental system uses a dry extraction cleaning method designed for use on wool and other compatible rugs.

Unlike conventional wet carpet cleaning methods, this system uses very little moisture and doesn't require an extended drying period.

According to Dusty, here's what makes the system especially convenient:

  • Use your rug the same day. There's no lengthy drying period, so you can walk on the rug immediately after cleaning.
  • Lightweight equipment. The cleaning machine weighs approximately 12 pounds, making it easy to handle.
  • Suitable for wool. The system uses a wool-safe cleaning product.
  • Professional guidance included. We show you how to use the equipment and share tips for getting good results.
  • A practical short-term solution. It can make a noticeable improvement when your rug needs freshening up in a hurry.

Dry extraction systems are also used in commercial environments such as hotels and cruise ships, where taking carpets out of service for lengthy drying periods isn't always practical.

For customers with wool rugs, this can be particularly appealing because it offers a low-moisture alternative to conventional wet carpet cleaning.

Of course, not every cleaning method is suitable for every rug, so we'll help you determine whether the rental system is appropriate for yours.

Is Dry Extraction as Good as Professional Area Rug Washing?

No, and Dusty is the first to say so.

Dry extraction can do a good job of improving a rug's appearance, but it isn't the same as fully washing and rinsing an area rug.

Professional area rug washing is designed to remove accumulated soil from deeper within the rug's fibres and foundation, whereas dry extraction primarily addresses accessible surface soil using a low-moisture cleaning method.

Think of dry extraction as a convenient way to freshen your rug when time is limited, rather than a complete substitute for periodic professional washing.

For a rug that needs more thorough care, we still recommend having it professionally washed.

But when you need your rug looking better today, and you don't have time to wait for a full professional wash, our rental system can be an excellent alternative.

And don't worry if you've never operated one before. We'll show you exactly how it works and give you professional tips to help you achieve the best possible results.

Why Not Just Have a Carpet Cleaner Clean Your Area Rug?

You might be wondering why you couldn't simply call a carpet-cleaning company and have them run their equipment over your area rug.

After all, that's usually much faster.

The important distinction is that wall-to-wall carpet cleaning and professional area rug washing are two different processes.

Traditional carpet-cleaning equipment is designed primarily for cleaning installed carpeting. Methods such as hot water extraction, bonnet cleaning and other surface-oriented techniques can work well for that purpose.

However, area rugs can be constructed from very different materials, including wool, cotton, silk and other natural fibres. Some rugs also contain delicate dyes, specialized foundations or construction details that require additional care.

Applying unsuitable cleaning methods, excessive heat or aggressive mechanical action can potentially damage certain rugs.

At Luv-A-Rug®, our focus is on understanding the rug itself and selecting an appropriate washing method.

That's why we recommend professional area rug washing when a rug needs a thorough cleaning, particularly for valuable wool rugs, Persian rugs and other natural-fibre pieces.

If you need a quicker solution, our dry extraction rental system offers another option without trying to turn a delicate area rug into wall-to-wall carpeting.

What Should You Expect When Booking Your Rug Washing?

For most rugs, the professional washing, drying and finishing process takes approximately one week. The additional waiting time depends on how many rugs are already scheduled ahead of yours.

During particularly busy periods, the overall turnaround may be several weeks. During quieter periods, it can be considerably shorter.

The best advice? Give us a call or send us a text before bringing in your rug. We'll tell you what our current turnaround looks like so you can plan accordingly.

And if you're in a real hurry, ask about our dry extraction rental system. You might be able to freshen up that rug today instead of explaining to your guests why there's a big empty space in the living room!

At Luv-A-Rug®, our goal is to help you choose the most appropriate way to care for your rug, whether that's a complete professional washing or a practical cleaning solution you can use yourself.
